6th Grain has been selected to support Partners of the Americas in its USDA Food for Progress grant to be implemented in Mauritania, which focuses on developing a stable source of fruits and vegetables through increasing productivity in mangoes, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, and onions. Working with its partners in the region, 6th Grain will support services for farmers through digital tools, hydrological models and suitability assessments for each crop.

Working with Partners of the Americas, 6thGrain will support development of the horticulture sector along the Senegal River in Mauritania by:

  • Using remote sensing data and models to map horticulture production areas in the three regions and overlap the areas with crop suitability models.
  • Identifying multiple contiguous fields in the three regions to help guide targeting of horticultural crop investments.
  • Assessing historical and current productivity by farm/field and generate a relative productivity index for all fields in the selected areas.
  • Developing hydrological models for the three regions to understand water use efficiency.
  • Assessing water flow/use by field and generate runoff maps to determine irrigation water use and risk for salination and erosion through time.

The project’s focus is to create a more sustainable agricultural sector in Mauritania for thelong-term.
